Misconception #1

Alphas are Obeyed Because They Are Feared By The Group

Before truly understanding the nature of an alpha, one must first explore the concept of power, specifically as it pertains to alpha leadership. Alpha “power” only exists insofar as the group welcomes it; as the alpha wins group trust by demonstrating his ability to guide and protect.

Gaining trust is fundamental to alpha existence. People cannot trust someone whom they fear.

Whether viewed on a broad social level, or on a local street corner, one will observe time and again, trust, as an element infusing all of alpha behavior.  An alpha does not increase his alpha status by suddenly and unexpectedly attacking someone.  Creating fear in this way, would actually work to undermine his status in the eyes of others. It would fly in the face of the trust he has created and fostered; trust of him by the group he leads and protects.

Misconception # 2

An Alpha Dominates by Exhibiting Superior Physical Strength and Fighting Ability Within The Group

Alpha leadership is in no way associated with physical dominance or aggression.  In fact, quite the opposite is true. Alpha’s calm demeanor in the face of adversity is a significant factor in negotiation –  a major aspect of being alpha. Negotiation skill, both recognizing the need for it, and possessing the skill to execute it, are essential alpha attributes.  Alpha’s calmness during negotiation shows her supreme confidence in resolving any conflict.

The suggestion that becoming the best fighter will make one an alpha is a misconception regarding alpha behavior, particularly among ill-informed alpha ‘wanna-bes.’  An illustration of this outlook would be “I am the alpha, therefore I am entitled and get only the best, while everyone else suffers the leftovers.”  It is a quick and sure way to expose a beta, posing as an alpha.

Misconception # 3

As Their Leader, The Alpha’s Needs Are Paramount To Those of The Group

The fact is, the alpha looks out for the group.  It is why the group puts their trust in him, because he makes sure that they get what they need to survive.  An insecure beta, works against those standards, as demonstrated in the illustration above.  One of the biggest mistakes that ‘wanna be’ alphas make is they do not permit other group members to achieve their needs.  The truth is that the majority of alpha communication is intentionally designed to allow individuals to function so that everyone is able to obtain what they need– not want, but need, in order for them to operate smoothly as a group.

Misconception # 4

Control and Dominance are the Cornerstones of Alpha Leadership

It is telling that the origin of the word leadership is not associated with concepts such as ‘command,’  or ‘dominance.’   In fact, synonyms for leadership are ‘guidance,’ ‘management,’ and ‘direction.’  Actually, it is human nature for people to respond positively to leadership.  There is, then, a substantial difference between leadership and domination. Domination infers supremacy, superiority, and rule.

In reality, the alpha leader’s power has nothing to do with any perceived control or dominance over the group. The alpha’s calm, steady composure and quiet, attentive manner are her indispensable strengths. They indicate the alpha’s superior ability to quickly and accurately assess the essentials of a volatile situation.  She’s thus seen as capable of determining an effective course of action insuring group integrity and assuring the best possible outcome.  Aiming to engender and sustain the group’s vital trust, it is in this calm, quiet way, that the alpha leader gradually earns, and finally achieves, her post as chief decision maker.

Secrets of Affiliate Marketing

One of the easiest and fastest way to generate income online is through affiliate marketing. This is when you send visitors to someone else’s product sales page, they make the sale and deliver the product, and you get a percentage of the sale price as your commission, which for digital products can be 50% or more.

These are a some of the benefits

1. You can get started very quickly because you don’t have to create a product, write the sales page, design the website, create marketing materials, or set up the ordering, billing & delivery system.
2. There is no time requirement on your part because the product owner does all the hard work:  a.  support, b. maintenance, and c. billing.
3. Your efforts are risk-free, because the product owner has already made sure the product sells. So if you send visitors you will get paid.

There’s no denying that these benefits make affiliate marketing the best thing going.

OK, but it’s not all rosy…

Once you send your visitors to the product sales page, they are gone forever. Most of them will not buy on their first visit, which means you’re losing over 90% of the traffic right off the top. That’s fine for the product owner because she can sell to them again and again, but you can’t.

Is there are way around this?

What you need to do is capture the contact info of your visitors before sending them to the product website. By getting their contact info, you can follow up increase your odds of making the sale by sending them back to the product owner’s website multiple times. And if you’re a super star affiliate, you’ll provide high-quality content before sending them to the product website.

Here’s what these affiliate marketing strategies will do for you:

1. You’ll be building your own list of potential customers that you can market to again and again.
2. You’re generating good will by giving them high-quality content. This way, they are much more likely to make a purchase when you send them to the sales page.

If you want to create an affiliate marketing system like this, you’ll need the following:

1. A lead capture page, preferably with video
2. One or more content-rich “warm up” pages
3. A multi-part email series with at least 5 emails in it

Instead of sending visitors directly to the product sales page, you’ll send them to your lead capture page first. It captures the name and email of your visitors and puts them into your autoresponder, which then begins sending out the 5-part email series. Then it redirects them to your content pages after they subscribe to your email series.

These high-quality content pages provide value and build good will. This way your visitor is more likely to buy when they get to the product owner’s website. And at the same time, the email series begins following up with them to get them back to the sales page, in case they don’t buy on the first visit.

Putting all of these pieces together will increase your sales by 500% or more, so it’s obviously worth the time and energy to do it. And after you get it all set up, it runs on total auto-pilot. You just refer people to your lead capture page, instead of the product sales page.

Setting it all up yourself requires some skill, and if you’re not up to it, you can use a service like Affiliate Silver Bullet. With a service like that, you don’t have to do anything. They make the video, build the squeeze page, write the email series, develop the content mini-site, etc. And then just give you a finished package. The major benefit of using a service like this is that you can get started right away, and for a whole lot less than it would cost to do it all yourself. The drawback is that you won’t be the only one using these affiliate tools. But the internet is huge, so this shouldn’t really affect you.

Alternatively, you can use a service like Elance to “outsource” each of these compnents. Whichever way you decided to go, it’s critical to get an affiliate marketing system like this in place, if you’re at all serious about your business.

Larry Beacham Interviews Mike Dillard On The Importance Of Being Genuine

Anyone that’s even remotely serious about using the principles of attraction marketing knows the name Mike Dillard.  I had the opportunity to spend some time with Mike while at the No Excuses Summit held in Las Vegas this past weekend.

I asked Mike a couple of questions related to video marketing as well as how to utilize the social community Better Networker to build your brand.  As you can imagine, the wisdom that he shared is priceless, and I have the entire interview transcribed below.

ME: Hey, this is Larry Beacham, The Stonecold Millionaire.  I’m here on the final day of the No Excuses Summit with Mr. Mike Dillard.  As you all know, Mike is very, very successful and very, very well known for being “the Godfather of Attraction Marketing.”  I know you’ve been around to spearhead a lot of us that are in attraction marketing.  The first time that I saw one of your videos, I wondered if the personality that you have was really your personality.

MIKE: Hmm…

ME:  I’ve seen people change.

MIKE:  Right.

ME:  Now, I’ve watched you do videos, I’ve watched you on stage, and you’re the same guy whether you’re on video or not.  So how important is being authentic and genuine on video?

MIKE:  I think it’s extremely important.  Video marketing is an unbelievably powerful tool, but it’s a little bit awkward when you first try it because it’s unfamiliar for most of us.  And, I can’t tell you how nervous I was the first time I started doing video and whatever it may be, so I really…just being yourself is the easiest way to do it.  You know, coming across I could be really energetic and high frequency and just bouncing all over the place and entertaining, but that’s now who I am and eventually that gets old and that gets tiring.  So, I think just being yourself is the absolute best way to go.  I’ll be the first to admit; in a lot of my videos I’ll use an outline, or use a teleprompter that we have because it just makes it that much easier.  When you can stop focusing on what to say, you can focus more on relaxing and just being yourself.

ME:  That’s good because the first 15,000 videos that I did I was stiff or I said too much or I was trying to think too much, and I decided to do two things:  Number one was emulate.  Obviously I could pick up on the fact that that was who you really were, but then Number two I said people are going to accept me for me.  I’m not going to change just because the camera is cut on.  If I’m going to use attraction marketing in its purest sense I need to be me.  So if someone were to see me out and about with my kids and I were talking, that’s the same Larry Beacham that they see on camera talking about a tip or giving advice.  I thought that was key.

One final thing, Mike; Better Networker.  Now, I came to know that you recognized or knew my name at least from Better Networker.

MIKE:  Yep.

ME:  When I walked away from that, I was on a high obviously to know that someone like you knew me, but what I really conceptualized and thought deeply about was, you really never know who you’re impacting or who sees your content.

MIKE:  Sure.

ME:  You really never understand how you can position yourself as a true expert and leader, and who you might get a phone call from at some point.  So, help people understand what Better Networker is specifically and how it can help them to expand their expertise, who sees them, you know – what really is the value in that.

MIKE:  Better Networker is a social community kind of like Facebook, but it is just for network marketers.  And, the reason that I built it is because Magnetic Sponsoring is really all of my personality and energy into it and it’s associated with me, so I wanted a platform that anyone like yourself or anybody else could go out give value to the community and use it as a soapbox to stand up and say, “Hey I have value to give; I have something to teach you; I have something that will help you guys build the business.”  In so doing, it will enable you to build a fan base, build a following and become a leader.  Today’s event, No Excuses, is a perfect example of that.  We have 800 people from around the world in a room here for 3 days, and the guys who put it on, Raymond Fong and Fernando Ceballos two years ago were just guys hanging out on Better Networker and they started putting out ridiculously good content on Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.  They were “nobodys” in the industry; they had full-time jobs working at an aerospace engineering company.  They’re in their 20’s and then they just show up to Better Networker and start recording videos teaching people really cool search engine techniques, and before they knew it they had built this little cult following on Better Networker that I noticed because their work was being seen and being talked about in the forums.  Six months later, they were speaking at one of my events, and now they’re holding their own, which is the biggest in our industry this year just 24 months later.  They quit their jobs, fired their bosses, make a multiple 6-figure income  and all from getting on Better Networker and starting to participate in the forums putting out really good content.

ME:  Yeah, you got my wheels turning on that one!  Thanks Mike for taking the time.

I’ve been studying human psychology for several years now, and what might surprise you, is that attraction between people isn’t really a choice, it’s a biological response.

By learning how to flip these attraction switches on within ourselves, we automatically begin to attract others.

You see people are genetically programmed to feel attraction towards others who have equal or higher levels of value and status. [Alpha attraction]

Just think about your personal experiences and you’ll find this to be true…

Do doctors hang out with the crews that mow their lawn?

As a woman, are you more attracted to a man who has a higher social status level than you, no matter what he looks like?

Are you attracted to, and aspire to be someone more successful than yourself within your industry? [Alpha leaders]

I know these are pretty basic scenarios, but you can extrapolate them to no end.

The bottom line is that the level of personal value and status you give yourself and demonstrate, compared to the level your prospect has, will determine if you’ll ever sponsor them.

This actually began back in our cave man days and it was crucial to our survival.

During that period in time, value and status was demonstrated by size, and physical prowess. A larger, stronger [Alpha] male held more value because he could fight off enemies, protect his family against predators, and bring home more food.

Females were biologically attracted to him because he meant security, stability, safety, and healthy offspring.

Other members of the tribe wanted to befriend and serve him, which allowed them to benefit from his power through association. Think of a Hollywood star and their entourage of friends. [Alpha recruiting]

Think of an industry expert or celebrity who provides their endorsement… Power through association.

The leader mated the most, had the most offspring, and this trend engrained itself into our very DNA over hundreds of thousands of years.

It’s no different today except for how value and status are demonstrated. Instead of physical size and ability, it’s typically through knowledge and means because you don’t have to be the biggest, baddest kid on the block just to survive anymore. Specifically in this industry, the best way to increase your value to others is to increase your knowledge level.

Now do you think your prospects would rather work with a MLM distributor who can teach them skills like online lead generation and attraction marketing, or someone who can’t really teach them anything at all?

The answer is obvious, so always remember that if you want to make the sponsoring process effortless, you need to increase your value to your prospects by increasing your level of knowledge and experience.

It has nothing to do with technological gadgets like auto-dialers, scripts, or lead lists.

I could give you all of those things, but if you didn’t hold any personal value in the eyes of your prospects, you would still find yourself struggling to build a MLM team and acquire MLM customers.

In order to generate attraction at a biological level, you must use Demonstrations Of Higher Value, (DOHV’s), when you interact with your prospects.

The opposite, “Demonstrations Of Lower Value” (DOLV) are usually what occur when a newbie is trying to recruit a lead.

If you do not demonstrate that your value is equal to or greater than your prospect’s, they will not join your MLM business. Period.

Recruiting is about [Alpha] leadership and you must demonstrate that you are the  leader through both verbal and non-verbal cues.

Here they are:

[Alpha Traits]

1) Be healthy and fit. People who stay fit are more attractive. It shows self-respect and they have a more positive energy about themselves.

2) Have a good sense of fashion. [Alpha Style] Dressing with old sloppy clothes or with little fashion sense conveys a lack of social intelligence which demonstrates lower value.

3) Be comfortable with yourself. Stand or sit relaxed. You’re here, you’re confident, and in control of your world.

4) Have a sense of humor and smile. If you’re feeling like a victim, if you’re frustrated, or just pissed at the world, get over it. People don’t want that kind of energy around them. It doesn’t bring value or benefit them in any way. Smile and have fun. It’s attractive.

5) Don’t be needy. This is a common theme throughout this course. A man or woman of high value is comfortable with who they are as a person and where they’re at in life. It’s important to feel and convey this sense of abundance. When you’re emotionally attached to a specific outcome, your MLM prospects pick up on it and perceive you as a low value person.

6) Be unaffected by others. Don’t react to people’s emotional tests or try to impress them.

Don’t seek attention for attention’s sake, validation, or understanding. You are a leader. You get attention naturally without seeking it.

7) Speak to others with volume and confidence. Play the Cd’s in the course over and over again and listen to HOW Mark and I sound when we talk. You’ll hear a calm, caring confidence.

Always be the one to lead interactions and conversations.

I’m sure that if you think about what I’ve shared with you, that you’ll recognize the role this human dynamic plays in your life on a daily basis…

And in fact, I’d like to share a little test.

Do this TODAY.

Next time you’re walking around at lunch or on an errand… ANYWHERE… make eye contact with a stranger who’s walking toward you.

If YOU break eye contact with them, then we need to work on your sponsoring skills.

If you can maintain eye contact with strangers until they look away, then you’re probably doing pretty well in this industry.

That simple test is an indicator of your current confidence and [alpha] leadership levels.

I’ve been blessed to know a lot of great marketers.
Not just so-called “gurus”, either.
But mostly just extremely successful marketers who work their own projects and never teach what they know (i.e. instead of selling shovels to gold diggers, these dudes have a secret map to the gold which they KEEP to themselves.)
Anyway, lately I got to thinking about these people.
What makes the best of the best “tick”?
What makes them stand out?
What advantages do they have over everyone else?
And I realized a lot of them (almost all) share certain traits that have probably had a lot to do with their rise to the top. Traits not necessarily found in other groups of people (including entrepreneurs).
Here are a few of these traits…
· Love breaking rules
· Sense of humor
· Stubborn
· Open minded to new ideas
· Yet, don’t suffer fools gladly
· Obsessed with their work (it’s not “work”, it’s play)
· Passionate
· Relentless
· Contrarian (especially when it comes to marketing)
· Aggressively guard their time
· Laser-like focused on their goals
· Short attention spans (strange, but true)
· Geeky
· Driven by someone they have to “get back” at
· Optimistically pessimistic (i.e….

they do everything in their power to arrange for things to go as planned, but also expect things to go wrong and behave accordingly)
There are many more traits than this. Probably dozens and dozens more. But it can’t hurt to study this list whenever you get stuck and need a little inspiration.
I mean, who knows?
Some of their “stuff” may just wear off on you.

Introduction

‘The Alpha Leadership Model’ is a modern model of leadership whose objective is said to capture and share the latest and most up-to-date knowledge about the practice of successful leadership.  The Alpha Leadership model defines a set of concepts, methods and knowledge modeled from observing and teaching leaders from all around the globe. A lot of of the leadership skills (for example emotional intelligence, weak signal management, mental agility) which are key to achievement in today’s corporate world, are not taught in business universities, are rarely discussed by company academics, nor are they recognized inside of corporations as they recruit and train their staff. Alpha Leadership

Leadership is a learned behavior that nearly anyone can accomplish. In its truest manifestation, leadership is essentially about proceeding first, and influencing others as much by one’s deeds as by one’s words.  From this viewpoint, powerful leadership can be viewed as the capability to involve others in the process of accomplishing a goal within some larger arrangement or milieu.  Leaders involve and sway other people so as to attain objectives within a system. The Alpha Leadership model purports to take up each of these crucial components, comprising the “work space” of leadership.

Anticipate, Align and Act

The Alpha Leader (in this model) has three core abilities necessary to transport the group into action:  Anticipate, Align and Act.  The task through relationship is producing cooperation. Human beings respond to leadership.  There is a great distinction between leadership and control.   Powerful leadership is not  a function ofsimply adjusting one’s behavior to a particular scenario so as to get somebody to reach a specific task, but instead to promote the expression of every individual’s potential by helping him or her perform beyond predicted outcomes.

Application to Network Marketing

While the focus of Alpha Leadership here is within the generic corporate business setting (The Alpha Leadership Model)  its  ideas, skills and resources may well be utilized in other contexts where striving to enhance performance or outcomes is the goal.

Concepts applicable to the network marketing backdrop include: 1)  the theory that an  alpha must keep his promises, gain trust, and insure that  individual needs are met (insofar as they help to fulfill group requirements). 2) The Three A’s – Anticipation, Alignment, and Action. This element of the model serves generally as a progressive definition of leaders’role in downplaying conventional hierarchical power models.

The removal of superfluous formality effects to augment the powerful creative potential of dynamic multi-dimensional group interaction. Under our interpretation of this kind of a modern model, the assigned Alpha Leader of a network marketing endeavor (flexibly imagined both in quantity and in form) would normally strive for high levels of group function and production. The dual objectives being, significant financial compensation, and appreciation of personal work and worth. These rewards consequentially dispensing to every team associate as well as to and within groups among the respective whole.

Conclusion

Certainly more extensive applications of this and any other Alpha Leadership model are possible. This is where imagination and creativity may give life to new and expanded ideas on how Alpha Leadership can improve the quality and productivity of network marketing organizations via the relationships between their members. Your subconscious mind is like a computer in that it runs programs.

Right now, as you are reading this, you are running programs to control your breathing, your heartbeat and your thoughts. Your programs are neither good nor bad. Some of them benefit you while others limit you. Your programs control your life in the background.

You can think of programs like beliefs or mindsets.

Manifesting is difficult until you re-program

your mind.

Why did I use the word re-program?

Well, you and I were programmed as we were growing up. We run wealth programs, health programs, sex programs, relationship programs and self image programs – just to name a few.

Our programs define how we think about the world and ultimately, how we experience life. The frightening thing is that a lot of your programs are complete nonsense.

For example, I used to run a program in my subconscious mind called “No pain, No gain.” Sound familiar?I learned this belief from my Dad, who worked hard and didn’t really love his work. Here’s what showed up later on in my life… If I was succeeding, there was always pain and struggle involved.

When I saw this, I invested sometime installing a new program – “Effortless Living.” Within months, my world was very, very different. Financial success began falling into my lap effortlessly.

‘No Pain, No Gain’ is an example of a nonsense program. It is not true that you have to work hard and suffer in order to succeed in life.

See, you might want to manifest wealth, but if your subconscious mind is programmed for ‘scarcity’, you’ll NEVER be wealthy, or at least not for long.

In America today, 50% of all lottery winners lose their winnings are are back in debt within 2 years. Take a moment to let that statistic sink in. It’s incredible. The lottery winners were programmed to spend money, not to keep it, so their subconscious mind makes sure that they lose it!

Here’s a take away for you: If you want to create wealth and keep your wealth, you need to remove your limiting programs and install programs that are supportive of creating wealth.

One of the easiest and fastest ways to re-program your mind is through visualization. Make a daily practice of visualizing yourself living the life you want to lead and being a person with the mindsets you will need to have to create that life. Here are some tips to help you along…

Two tips to help re-program your mind.

Tip #1: Stop visualizing and begin experiencing.

If you want to re-program your subconscious mind, you need to be able to communicate effectively with it. Your subconscious mind speaks the language of the five senses, called VAKGO.

VAKGO is an acronym for Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Gustatory and Olfactory. These are just fancy names for seeing, hearing, feeling (emotions and tactile feeling), tasting and smelling. As far as your subconscious mind is concerned, a REAL experience contains all of these five elements (VAKGO).

Here’s my point. If you are just visualizing (using the visual sense only), it’s unlikely that you will trick your subconscious mind into believing that your mental visualization is an actual experience because you have only given your subconscious mind one fifth of an experience i.e. sight.

So STOP visualizing and begin experiencing. The next time you relax and begin your mental practice of conscious creation, be sure to include all the FIVE senses in your imagination.

You see, the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between a REAL experience. By imagining an experience using VAKGO, you are tricking the mind into believing that your IMAGINED experience is real. You make your mental experience real by including all the FIVE senses in your imagination.

Tip #2: Cycle VAKGO

During your creative visualization time, cycle the five senses round and round in your mind. Notice what you are seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling in your imagined experience. Then repeat that cycle over and over again throughout your visualization time.

This process of cycling VAKGO has the effect of branding your experience into your subconscious mind. You subconscious mind instantly communicates your intention to the Quantum Field (a physics term for the energy that hold the universe together) and your manifestation wheels are set in motion.

If you are not spending some time in your imagination every day, you are missing out and you’ll probably never re-program your mind for success.

America has seen perilous times before. During World War II, when resources were in short supply, we banded together and came up with solutions to support the war effort. When we were cut off from Malaysia, the largest producer of natural rubber, our scientists came up with synthetic rubber that was used to move our Jeeps and trucks. Polio, one of the most dreaded diseases of the 20th century, crippled thousands of people – until meetings its match in Jonas Salk. The American microbiologist came up with the first vaccine to fight the disease, and today polio has been largely eradicated.

These are just a few of the many stories of people who have improved the world for the better – people who  the entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurs, by their nature, see not only problems but solutions and opportunities. And, in this article, I’d like to take the opportunity to encourage budding entrepreneurs with some advice. I’d like to propel them to become leaders in their fields – to go out and change the world!

1. Learn then earn. Be pulled, not pushed.

Becoming a successful entrepreneur starts with accumulating knowledge about many topics. First, you have to work on what I call your generic skills: reading, writing and basic math. If you cannot communicate effectively with people, you are in trouble.

Second, pick an industry, focus on it and master it. As your knowledge accumulates, your functional skills will improve. Along the way, you will build your network. And when you are recognized in your industry as someone who is good at what they do, that is the time to leave. Most people unfortunately go out on their own when they are pushed out. Big mistake. The time to leave is when you are being pulled by the entrepreneurial spirit.

For example, I worked for Citibank in the late ’70s and after completing several successful financial deals, I soon began receiving offers from headhunters for other positions in my industry. These headhunters were calling me because I was building a solid reputation for expertise. If you are good, they will find you, too.

The Law of Frequency

Business consultants are paid a lot of money for what they supposedly “know”. They are hired because of their esteemed resumes and knowledge of how to make companies money. I went to Wharton Business School to learn how to “know” why some financial deals work and why others don’t. But then I learned about the law of frequency. I played the numbers and came up with the conclusion that you don’t always know what’s going to happen. It’s trial and error.

Each year on the first day of class I taught at the New York University, I would make smart – and somewhat arrogant – graduate students spend half an hour flipping coins. I would tell them to flip the coin 10 times and then go to the board and record how many times the coin landed on heads or tails. Most people think it’s going to be an even 5-5 split. It’s not. Flip it 100 times it’s almost always 51 to 49 heads because of frequency. It’s a great exercise that teaches that you just can’t go into business and complete two transactions a year and say, “OK, this doesn’t work” if you are not successful, or “I’m brilliant” if you are successful. You’ve got to understand frequency.

2. Schedule your time – 168 hours in a week.

At 17, I discovered the secret that I now whisper in the ears of my students: There are 168 hours in a week. When you ask people how many hours are in a week, most people think 40 hours, because they are programmed to think in work-week terms. Even most online calendars work in daily eight-hour increments.

During my freshman year in college i was majoring in engineering, science, and physics. The first two weeks I was blown away. I met so many kids with 1,600 SAT scores. I even met people who could beat me at chess, which made me mad because I was a top New York chess champion in high school. I thought I didn’t stand a chance. I lost my direction, and in my first semester I got a 1.8 grade point average.

This put me on academic probation, and I was told I would have to pass eight classes during the next semester. If I didn’t, with my low draft number, 3, I would go straight to Vietnam. So I came back from semester break very motivated and signed up for eight classes.

I opened the calendar and started scheduling my time carefully to make sure I got in the required study time. And then I realized there are 168 hours in a week. Once I threw out my social calendar, I discovered what college students don’t realize – even most businessmen don’t know – just how many hours we have in a week to get things done. So what happened? I finished all eight classes, received an A in five and passed the others, which were scored pass/fail. The next semester, I took 10 classes and got straight A’s. I graduated in 2 1/2 years and went straight to Wharton School of Business at 19.

Thomas Edison said success is 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent inspiration. Don’t waste these 168 hours, schedule them. Today I still schedule my time intensely, but mostly for my kids. All my children have calendars, and they love the structure in their lives.

3. Get rich by solving problems.

When most people are unhappy customers, they get mad; I try to get rich. All of my businesses started the same way: I got rich by improving the world and making a lot of people happier in the process.

Restaurants are my favorite example lately. I joke that the working title for my next book is 100 Businesses I wish I had Started, So Someone Please Start Them. It amazes me that here we are in 2008 and yet tonight I will go out to dinner and I will sit at a restaurant with half its 100 seats empty. Then I will go to another restaurant with all seats filled and a waiting list. And at the restaurant with the empty tables there is a waitress who is probably a single mom who needs those tips. And there are probably several families who don’t want to make dinner, but also don’t want to waste the time waiting 30 minutes for a table at a restaurant.

I’m amazed that restaurants haven’t taken a page from the airline industry by building a computer system or Web site that can detect these empty seats. It would be as easy as setting up a text-messaging system that could send people information about the number of open seats.

I was working with American Airlines and Sabre in Dallas in the early 1980s when they learned how to fill every airline seat. And the answer was pure mathematics. Now grandma, who wants to visit her grandchild, can’t afford $300 for a flight but for $122 she’ll take it even if she has to fly through three cities to get to her destination. A small price to pay to see her precious grandkids.

Every day of my life I see examples like the restaurant and I think, why hasn’t some entrepreneur fixed this? And today that’s probably what I do best: stimulating entrepreneurs to go and fix problems. And, ultimately, the American way is about service – serving each other.

Mentoring: Opening Minds to Opportunity

One of the most exciting experiences in my life is teaching. I became an adjunct professor at New York University in 1979.

I would do case studies on topics such as Trump Tower and have students role-play – with Donald Trump sitting in the back of class wearing a hat. In those days he wasn’t a celebrity; he was just a successful real estate developer. And the students would be terrified when he would stand up and say, “I am the real Donald Trump and if I did it the way you were talking about, I would be broke.”

But frankly, I got at least as much out of the class as the students. I learned from the older students that they were impressed with the position I had in the Reagan Administration. But the freshmen weren’t so impressed. They didn’t want to work in the White House; they wanted to become the president.

I realized that, when you’re 18, your world is wide open. But as each year passes, one more nail goes into the coffin, killing your dreams and your aspirations. And by the time you reach 25, you’ve been beaten down and become a realist. And my advice is you can’t let these things get you down.

In 1995, when the first Jewish temple opened in Park City, Utah, I had the opportunity to counsel about six to eight kids a year through high school to get into college. And after meeting these kids, the first thing I would have to do is get rid of some of the stuff some other teachers taught them – that they can’t do math well or write well, or that it’s not realistic to think they can become president or cure cancer. I have continued this practice and to date have mentored dozens of students for admission into top universities.

But these young students still have energy, and it’s infectious. I need their energy, their excitement – and I get it from my high school students who are really bright and talented and who haven’t gotten slapped around. I want to teach them to deal with the slaps. I want them to rebel against rejection. By the time some of these kids reach 16 and 17, they become afraid to open their mouths and say they want to cure cancer or polio. I want to teach them they can do anything they want. It’s up to them to go out and improve the world.

4. Notice what could be better and do something about it.

How many times do you get put on hold when you call a company’s customer service line? I call the 1-800 number every morning because I want to stay close to the customer experience. If I see areas for improvement, I’ll record all the information and give it to my directors. And if it doesn’t change in a couple of months, I send letters to the directors saying we need to find the person in the company who got my letter three months ago and ask why the problem hasn’t been fixed. America deserves no less. Companies become rich because they find a way to serve others better. And if someone at your company is not serving your customers, it hurts more than your company; it hurts America.

We can’t be just consumers – we have to keep our eyes open and our entrepreneurial instincts honed. We have to take responsibility for making the world a better place. And when we do, we’ll create our own opportunities.
